Extensions and color

Ask Megan. The questions clients ask most.

Which extension method fits your hair, how to care for it at home, what happens at a consultation, and how to keep blonde from going brassy. Answered in full.

K-tips vs. wefts

Beaded wefts are for a lot of length and fullness in one visit. K-tips are for finer hair, sparse areas and a custom color blend. Here is how long each takes to put in, and how much upkeep each needs.

Do extensions damage your hair?

Extensions can damage your hair, but they don’t have to. I have worn them for more than 10 years, and the difference comes down to two things: how they go in, and how you care for them at home.

Caring for extensions at home

Brush morning, night and during the day, sleep in a loose braid, a low pony or a bonnet, and keep the ends moisturized. Here is the full routine I give every client, and the one I follow with my own.

What happens at a consultation

At an extension consultation we look at your hair in person, choose K-tips, wefts or a combination, and plan how much hair you need. With me it takes up to 30 minutes at my Gold Coast studio. Here is how to get one, and every question I am going to ask you.

Why blonde turns brassy

Hard water and mineral buildup are a common reason blonde turns brassy, and your products and heat tools change how it wears too. Here is what I tell my blonde clients, plus three small habits for between appointments.

How long do extensions last?

K-tips are worn 3 to 5 months before a full reinstall. Beaded wefts are moved up every 8 weeks. The hair itself can be reused for up to 12 months with good care. Here is what each number means.

How long does an install take?

A hair extension install takes about an hour and a half for beaded wefts, and 1.5 to 3 hours for custom K-tips. Here is the whole timeline, from the first consultation to your first move-up.

Balayage vs. highlights vs. lived-in

On my menu, custom balayage is foils placed to suit your skin tone and natural color. Lived-in color is low-maintenance color with custom placement. Highlights are full or partial blonding. Here is what each starts at, and how we choose together.

Telling your stylist what you want

To get the color you want, bring lots of inspiration photos, show a photo of the tone you mean instead of a word like “warm”, and tell your stylist what you use at home. Here is what I ask every color client so we both mean the same thing.

What a good extension stylist asks

A good extension stylist sees your hair in person, asks how you wear it, asks whether you want fullness, length or both, and tells you how to care for them. These are the questions I ask every extension client, and why each one matters.
