The short answer
“Wefts are really a great way to just quickly add a lot of hair at once. If you’re looking for just fullness, I would say keratin bonds are great for finer hair.”Megan Hudgin
Wefts are for length and a lot of fullness in one visit. K-tips are for finer hair, for filling in sparse areas, and for a custom color that has to match exactly.
| Beaded wefts | Custom K-tips | |
|---|---|---|
| Install time | About 1.5 hours | 1.5 to 3 hours, depending how much hair |
| Upkeep | Moved up every 8 weeks | Worn 3 to 5 months, then a full reinstall |
| Best for | A lot of length and fullness at once | Finer hair, sparse areas, a custom color blend |
Beaded wefts
Wefts are rows of hair sewn into a beaded foundation. They take about an hour and a half, and they are a quick way to add a lot of hair in one appointment.
Every 8 weeks we move them back up as your own hair grows, so they stay secure and clean for a healthy wear. Before I place a single row I ask whether you pull your hair back, and whether it is a high or low pony. Then I place the rows around that answer.
Custom K-tips
K-tips are small keratin bonds. I make the bonds myself for each client, matched to how much hair you have and blended to your color, so the weight is spread evenly across your head.
They take 1.5 to 3 hours to install and you wear them 3 to 5 months. After that we take them out and do a full reinstall. Each bond carries a small amount of hair, so I can place it exactly where you need it.
What I wear myself
I have finer hair and I have worn extensions for more than 10 years. Right now I wear wefts, sometimes a weft and K-tip combination. Honestly, I would pick K-tips for myself, but I install my own hair and I can’t place bonds on my own head.
Either way, the hair lasts
I use 100% Remy hair and color-match it myself. With good care at home, the same hair can be reused for up to 12 months.
We decide together
You don’t have to pick a method before you come in. Every extension client starts with an in-person consultation of up to 30 minutes at my studio in the Gold Coast, and we choose the method there, looking at your actual hair.
