Ask Megan

How to tell your stylist the color you want.

To get the color you want, bring lots of inspiration photos, show a photo of the tone you mean instead of a word like “warm”, and tell your stylist what you use at home. Here is what I ask every color client so we both mean the same thing.

Bring photos. Lots of them.

Photos that are all over the place are welcome. I go through them one at a time and ask what you like most about each one, and what you don’t. One might be the brightness, another the blend, another the placement. Together they tell me what you are after.

Tell me what you like now

I always ask what you like about your current hair, so we don’t accidentally lose it on the way to something new.

Pin down “warm”

“If somebody says warm and I think warm, you might think that means something different.”Megan Hudgin

So I ask. If you can, show me a photo of the tone you mean, and we are on the same page.

Celebrity photos are fine

“I’ve had a couple people bring in Tate McRae… I liked the very golden bronzy vibe of it all. And of course I’ve had a few of the Hailey Bieber’s. I love doing a dimensional rich brunette.”Megan Hudgin

Be honest about home

Tell me what products and heat tools you use, and whether you have hard water. Hard water and mineral buildup can turn color brassy.

“I can do a great color, but if you’re not taking care of it at home, it can look like a bad color.”Megan Hudgin

What to send me

  • A recent photo of your current color and length.
  • Your inspiration photos.
  • A little of your hair history.

Questions

Quick answers.

Should I bring inspiration photos to a color appointment?

Yes, and they do not have to match each other. Megan Hudgin goes through each photo and asks what you like and do not like about it.

What does “warm” mean in hair color?

It depends on who is saying it, which is why Megan asks. A photo of the tone you mean is clearer than the word.
